Protocol Comparison

Casambi vs KNX:
Which is right for your India project?

An honest, side-by-side guide for architects, MEP consultants, and developers — covering installation, cost, flexibility, and where each protocol truly wins.

The short answer

Casambi for retrofits, renovations & rapid deployments.
KNX for new-build mega-projects with complex multi-system integration.

Both are professional-grade technologies. The right choice depends on your wiring constraints, project timeline, budget, and how many systems you need to tie together. Read on for the full picture.

Bluetooth Mesh

Casambi

A proprietary Bluetooth Low Energy mesh protocol developed in Finland. Every Casambi-enabled device is a node — no hub, no gateway, no dedicated control cabling required. Commissioned entirely through a smartphone app.

Wireless — works over existing lighting circuits
App-based commissioning — hours, not weeks
Compatible with DALI, 0–10V, DMX, KNX, Matter
250,000+ installations worldwide
Twisted-pair Bus

KNX

An open ISO/IEC standard for building automation, developed in Europe. KNX uses a dedicated two-wire twisted-pair bus cable connecting every device in the system. Programming is done via ETS software by certified integrators.

Wired — dedicated bus cabling required throughout
ETS software programming by certified integrators
Integrates HVAC, security, AV, and lighting
Open international standard (ISO/IEC 14543)

The wireless advantage

Zero control wiring.
Unlimited scalability.

Casambi runs entirely over Bluetooth Low Energy — every driver, sensor, and switch communicates wirelessly over existing mains wiring. No dedicated bus cable, no control conduit, no civil works. For larger buildings, the Sites feature groups unlimited independent networks under a single dashboard, letting you trigger site-wide scenes and timers across every floor, wing, or building simultaneously — without a central server.

No bus cable No control conduit Up to 250 devices per network Unlimited networks per Site Site-wide scenes & timers

Choose wisely

Which protocol suits which project?

A practical guide for India's most common project types.

Choose Casambi

Office & Retail Retrofit

Occupied space — minimal disruption
Existing lighting circuits — no rewiring
Fast turnaround — days not months
Zones need to change as layout evolves

Choose Casambi

Residential & Hospitality

Apartments and premium homes
Hotel rooms — scene control & mood lighting
Circadian lighting for wellbeing
Owner / guest app control without IT setup

Choose Casambi

Healthcare & Education

Human-centric lighting for patient recovery
Occupancy sensing for energy compliance
Fast deployment for phased construction
No extra cabling in sensitive environments

Consider KNX

Large-scale New Build

100,000+ sq ft campus or tower
Bus cabling already in the MEP spec
HVAC, security & AV on a single protocol
Dedicated BMS infrastructure already planned

Consider KNX

Ultra-premium Villa

Client demands full wired infrastructure
Pool, gates, blinds, and climate on one system
Long construction timeline accommodates wiring
Budget allows premium integration complexity

Casambi + KNX Together

Hybrid Integration

Casambi handles all lighting wirelessly
KNX manages HVAC, blinds & access control
Casambi's KNX gateway bridges both systems
Best of both worlds — often the ideal spec

Time comparison

A typical mid-size office installation

How a 10,000 sq ft office project plays out from spec to handover.

Casambi — approx. 3–5 days total

Day 1

Specification & layout design

CasaNode reviews floor plan, specifies drivers and sensors, sends procurement list.

Day 2–3

Products installed by electrician

Casambi-enabled drivers replace existing ones. No additional cabling. Normal electrician skills suffice.

Day 4

Commissioning via app

CasaNode engineer configures zones, scenes, schedules, and sensors entirely through the Casambi app.

Day 5

Handover & training

Facilities manager trained on app. System live. Post-install support from CasaNode remotely.

KNX — approx. 4–8 weeks total

Week 1–2

Specification & ETS programming plan

Certified KNX integrator produces full schematic and ETS project file. Requires detailed MEP coordination.

Week 2–4

Bus cable installation

Dedicated KNX twisted-pair cable routed to every switch, sensor, and actuator. Ceiling access required throughout.

Week 5–6

ETS commissioning

Certified integrator programs the system using ETS software. Each device individually configured and tested.

Week 7–8

Testing, snagging & handover

Full system test, snagging list resolved, O&M documentation prepared. Any changes require ETS reprogramming.

Common questions

Frequently asked questions

The questions CasaNode's specifiers ask most often.

Yes — and this is actually a popular choice for large projects. Casambi handles all lighting wirelessly, while KNX manages the broader building systems (HVAC, blinds, access control). A Casambi KNX gateway bridges the two, so KNX events can trigger Casambi scenes and vice versa. You get wireless lighting flexibility without giving up KNX's building-wide integration depth.
Yes. Casambi's BLE mesh is self-healing — if any node fails or loses power, the network automatically reroutes around it. There is no central hub, so there is no single point of failure. Over 250,000 projects worldwide — including airports, hospitals, and large commercial campuses — run on Casambi.
Casambi uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) at 2.4 GHz, which shares spectrum with Wi-Fi. In practice, BLE mesh handles interference well through frequency hopping and mesh re-routing. CasaNode's commissioning team conducts site surveys before installation to identify dense RF environments and recommend appropriate node density to ensure reliable coverage.
Yes, completely. Casambi is an offline-first system — all intelligence is distributed across the nodes themselves. Schedules, scenes, and sensor automations all run locally without any internet connection. An optional Casambi gateway enables cloud monitoring and remote access, but it is not required for the system to operate.
With Casambi, expansion is trivial — simply install a new Casambi-enabled driver, pair it to the network via the app, and assign it to a zone. No cabling changes, no programming software. With KNX, expansion requires routing additional bus cable to the new device and reprogramming the ETS project file by a certified integrator.
CasaNode specialises in Casambi as India's Platinum Partner, but many of our clients run hybrid systems. We routinely supply Casambi lighting alongside existing KNX infrastructure and configure the Casambi–KNX gateway integration. If your project has a KNX backbone for building systems, we can recommend how to integrate Casambi seamlessly on the lighting side.
